Connections with Brighton and Hove : When Brighton became fashionable in the eighteenth century, the rich came down to the beach to swim. Many of them had difficulty in getting across the hard, unyielding stones to reach the water. People called dippers helped them into the water and the most celebrated of them all was Martha Gunn. Born in 1726, she acted in her role for more than 60 years, eventually retiring through infirmity and ill health. The Prince of Wales was fond of her and granted her free access to his kitchen at the Pavilion. She lived until 1815 and is buried in the churchyard of St Nicholas in Brighton. There is a portrait of her in the Pavilion.
