John (known as Jack) Berry Hobbs was born in Cambridge and went on to become one of the greatest professional cricketers of all time. He played for Surrey from 1905-1934 and England from 1908-1930.
Nicknamed "The Master", he scored a total of 61,760 runs and made 199 centuries in his career, an achievement that has yet to be beaten. He is remembered for his success on pitches known as difficult for batsmen and against the new South African "googly" bowlers, who had been causing problems for English batsmen.
In the 1911/12 season he was judged the best batsman in the world. In 1914 he joined the Royal Flying Corps for the duration of the First World War. He resumed his career in 1919 but was absent for most of the 1921 season due to appendicitis. Following his return, he became a safer player and was highly successful until his retirement.
Jack forged successful opening partnerships with several players during his career. At Surrey he was particularly effective alongside Tom Hayward and Andy Sandham, while Wilfred Rhodes and Herbert Sutcliffe joined him for England.
In 1953 he was knighted, becoming the first professional cricketer to be given that honour. In 2000 he was named as one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Century.
He died at the age of 81, having nursed his beloved wife Ada until the end of her days, just a few months before.
