Bob Grover was known affectionately as 'Boring Bob'. He was the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the Brighton-based ska-punk band The Piranhas. He rose to fame with the band's 1980 Top Ten hit, Tom Hark. The song was originally recorded by Elias & His Zig Zag Jive Flutes in 1958. Bob's version was produced by Pete Waterman. The song peaked at number six in the UK Singles Chart and was the band's most successful single. Two years after the chart success of Tom Hark, Bob scored another hit with Zambezi. He proudly proclaimed himself a 'two-time one-hit wonder.'
The Piranhas were already a well-known band amongst Brighton's burgeoning late 1970s punk scene. They recorded multiple BBC sessions.
Bob remained deeply connected to his Brighton roots despite brushes with fame. He continued to live in Brighton's Hanover neighbourhood, where he was a beloved community figure. He was well known for championing fellow musicians, offering advice and practical support.
After the original Piranhas disbanded in the early 1980s, Bob kept the band alive. He performed sporadically over the decades with changing line-ups. He also worked as a designer and programmer for a tech startup, which he helped to found.
Bob's legacy extends beyond his chart success. Tom Hark became a sports anthem. A notable adaptation was by Seagulls Ska for Brighton & Hove Albion, which Bob played at the opening of the team's new AMEX stadium in 2011. His contributions to music and Brighton's punk scene leave an enduring impact on fans and fellow musicians alike.
