Pauline Baynes was a celebrated illustrator, artist and author. She was born on 9th September 1922 at 67 Brunswick Place, Hove.
Pauline illustrated over 100 books mostly for children. Her precise, decorative and brightly-coloured style is much admired. Her most famous works were for the Chronicles of Narnia series, by C.S. Lewis, and books by her friend, J.R.R. Tolkien.
She created the cover of Watership Down, by Richard Adams, as well as illustrating many other well-known titles. Pauline was most proud of her 600 illustrations for Grant Uden's A Dictionary of Chivalry, for which she earned the Kate Greenaway Medal.
Pauline's work was influenced by medieval manuscripts and illustrators such as Edmund Dulac and Arthur Rackham. She was friends with and mentored by E.H. Shepard, who illustrated the Winnie the Pooh books.
During World War II, she and her sister joined the Women's Voluntary Service. They made maps and charts for the Royal Navy. These laid the groundwork for the maps Pauline later created for Tolkien's Middle-earth and C. S. Lewis's Narnia.
She illustrated her own books, contributed artwork to magazines and advertisements. She also designed stained glass, church embroideries and Christmas cards. Her drawings and paintings now sell for thousands of pounds.
Pauline died in Dockenfield, Surrey.
