735 Stephen Barnwell

Connections with Brighton and Hove : Stephen Barnwell was a WWII hero; born in Kent he enrolled in 46 Royal Marine Commando, 4th Special Service Brigade. Landing in Normandy on D-Day June 6th 1944, he was part of a unit tasked with taking and holding the town of Rots, Calvados, four days into the conflict. Rots lies to the west of the regional capital of Caen, a strategically important site. 46 Commando was the only English unit in what was a Canadian Army offensive. Stephen was twice wounded. In 2015, he was given the Freedom of the town of Rots and in 2019 was honoured and awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honeur by the French government and the Dutch Liberation Medal by the Netherlands government. After the war, he enrolled in the Civil Service and eventually retired to Saltdean where he was an active and well known member of the community.
