Connections with Brighton and Hove : Maud Streatfield Bond (1866–1959), was a pianist, conductor and musical entrepreneur born in Brighton in 1866. By 1891 Maud and one of her brothers William had established themselves in the world of the arts, with William becoming headmaster of Brighton Municipal School of Art and Maud describing herself as a ‘vocalist and musician’ studying at the Brighton School of Music at 148 North Street in the Athenaeum Hall. Maud and her brother lived together in Bath Street and later Prestonville Road, both near the Seven Dials. Maud’s career as a vocalist grew and she was much in demand as a solo singer, conductor, musical director and teacher of singing; she performed not only in Brighton and London but also in Paris, where the French audience was ‘charmed by her sweet voice and talking manner’. The ‘Maud Bond Cup’ was awarded at the Brighton Music Festival in 1932 and she was famed for arranging all-women concerts across Sussex, quite revolutionary at the time. . She lived a long and influential life, passing away at the age of 92 in Cuckfield.
