731 Dudley Button

Connections with Brighton and Hove : Dudley Button (1939-2023), affectionally known as ‘The Squire of Whitehawk’ had been born in Brighton, had been a server at St. Bartholomew’s and whose father William had been Mayor of Brighton in 1962. Dudley served as an RAF policeman before joining the Brighton borough police in 1966, retiring in 1994. After his long police career he was premises manager at Whitehawk Junior School and a governor of Whitehawk Infant School and his love of the area saw him being a founder member of the ‘Friends of Whitehawk’; he was also president of the Brighton branch of the Royal British Legion and for many years he was among those laying a wreath at the annual Chattri memorial service at Patcham, as well as being at services commemorating the Battle of Britain and the Armistice.
