Connections with Brighton and Hove :
Dancer and choreographer Anton Dolin has been called one of the most colourful and vital figures in modern ballet. Although his parents tried to discourage him from dancing when he was young they sent him to lessons. When he danced and acted at the Brighton Hippodrome, the theatre manager suggested that he be sent to London for training in dramatic art. In 1924 he joined Diaghilev's Ballets Russes as a soloist and from 1927 to 1928 ran his own company with Nemchinova, choreographing ballets to music. He was principal guest artiste with the Vic Wells ballet, founded the Markova-Dolin Ballet and joined New York's ballet theatre. He formed the ballet festival in London, now the English National Ballet and directed Rome Opera ballet. He was knighted in 1981 and died in 1983.
