Names on the buses
Connections with Brighton and Hove : John Scott Fulton had a remarkable career in public life and is best known in Sussex for being a founder of the University at Falmer. Many others claimed to have had the idea but Fulton was certainly the one to be most involved, becoming the first vice chancellor of the University of Sussex in the early days when the university had modest headquarters in Brighton. It expanded quickly during the early years and in 1967, he handed over to his great friend, Professor Asa Briggs. Before coming to Sussex he was vice chancellor of the University of Wales. Knighted in 1964, he became a life peer two years later. Fulton was also a BBC governor and took an interest in ITV in the early years. He was also chairman of the British Council and president of the Society for Research into Higher Education. Titling himself Lord Fulton of Falmer, he eventually left the campus to conduct a full-scale inquiry into the Civil Service.
