Connections with Brighton and Hove : Betty Howard was chairperson of the Women's Gas Federation, when British Gas withdrew its sponsorship in 1994 the group changed its name into The Women's Guild Friendship. Betty ran the branch totally independantly having at one point around 200 members. She organised monthly meetings usually with a speaker (one being Brighton & Hove's Managing Director at the time, Roger French). The Guild went on Day Out Trips almost every month and two holidays a year, one in the United Kingdom and one continental. She gave a lot of elderly ladies a complete social life over the years of running the Guild. She hired coaches from Brighton & Hove for over 40 years and considered herself as 'part of the firm'. Betty died in 2018 at the tender age of 98 and is commemorated at St Andrew's Church, Hove.
