Connections with Brighton and Hove : Chris Ogden was a popular and energetic Mayor of Peacehaven before his untimely death in April 2011. He joined the town council as a Conservative in 2007 and was chosen to be Mayor after only three years. He raised large sums of money for two charities, Help for Heroes and the Martlets Hospice. A local businessman, he was a founder member of the Peacehaven and District Chamber of Commerce. He was a prime mover in creating the annual Peacehaven and District Fayre and the first one was held in July 2010. His idea was to entertain people and tell them about groups they could join in the town. Mr Ogden was heavily involved in the building of the popular play area at The Dell. He was also behind the election of a Young Mayor for Peacehaven. He proposed that there should be a war memorial in Peacehaven and this was built in Meridian Park a few months after his death. After all the arguments over a waste water treatment works in Peacehaven, Mr Ogden was keen to promote good relations between local people and Southern Water. Sadly he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and died aged 64 near the end of his mayoral year. He was well liked by many people for his cheerful, optimistic manner and his widow Lesley said: “He was a glass half full man.”
