Connections with Brighton and Hove : Jeff Keen was a prolific and perceptive film-maker, poet and artist who lived for many years in Brighton and Hove, Born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire, he went to Oxford before attending an art college.in Chelsea... He moved to Brighton and took up work as a landscape gardener for the local council. In 1956, he married Jackie Foulds who helped him start making films. Some of Keen's films, such as Marvo Movie, were made with his friends and family. Many were influenced by Andy Warhol, He helped found the London Filmmakers’ Co-operative in 1966 and also started making scores of pioneering videos. Keen made more than 70 films despite not starting until he was in his late thirties. They are not well known to the public because they are highly experimental. But Keen was well regarded by the film establishment and received grants for some of his work. For a time he lived in Hove next to the former home of early film maker George Albert smith, In later life, he made drawings nearly every day and many of them are now highly regarded. He died in 2012 aged 88.
