Connections with Brighton and Hove : Maggie King was a devoted nurse who also became a formidable force in the Brighton tenants’ movement. Born in 1931, she moved from her Wiltshire home aged 16 to nurse at hospitals in Brighton. Later her work at Coppercliff Hospice in Brighton ignited her passion for helping vulnerable, elderly and disabled people. She became a senior union representative and was respected by friends and foes as a formidable but fair advocate. Maggie King helped the Nautical Training Corps gain their own building in Hollingbury. She was also involved with the Brighton Lions in raising money for charity. As a tenants’ leader she represented her neighbours in negotiations with the council and also helped start an internet forum for them. She became a nurse teacher and continued in this role voluntarily even after she had retired. Always willing to help the underdog, she remained busy despite increasing health problems. She died in 2011 aged 80.
