Connections with Brighton and Hove : For 30 years David Gray was conductor and director of the Brighton Youth Orchestra, one of the best in Britain. The orchestra regularly gave a well-received concert each year in the Dome during the Brighton Festival under his leadership and often performed elsewhere. Gray took the youngsters on tour to many countries including most of Europe, Canada and the USA. His partner, Christopher Poole, said: "The orchestra and its members were considered to be fine young ambassadors for Brighton and David was very proud of that. He dedicated his life to teaching and making music and was always proud of the fact that Brighton Youth Orchestra was considered to be one of the best in the UK." David Gray was awarded the MBE in 1987 for his work with youth music. Among the former members was Shoreham-based guitar virtuoso Richard Durrant who said Gray was a wonderful, inspirational man. Gray was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 1996 and died in 2003.
