Names on the buses

367 Tom Canneaux

Connections with Brighton and Hove : Tom was born and lived in the Brighton & Hove area, being a life-long transport enthusiast with the emphasis on trolleybuses. His close family connection with Tyneside meant he had a deep interest in the trolleybuses of Newcastle Upon Tyne and, to a lesser extent, those of South Shields. He was co-author of a book “The Trolleybuses of Newcastle Upon Tyne” which includes a mention of vehicles loaned by Brighton Corporation to Newcastle to cover wartime shortages. He was a member of the British Trolleybus Society for many years, being an active member for much of that time. His interest in the local transport scene centred on the bus fleet of the Brighton Hove & District Omnibus Company, with a comprehensive and detailed knowledge of the vehicles and the routes operated right from the days of his childhood, as well as knowing personally many of the company’s staff. It is said that he could identify certain buses simply from their sound. Tom’s knowledge of the world of insurance saw him employed for some years by the Sussex Mutual Building Society for whom he once appeared as a team member in a BBC Radio general knowledge quiz. Latterly he spent some time working at Gatwick Airport. Aside from transport interests, his other main passion was for classical music, his favourite composers being Beethoven and Mozart, often playing the music himself on his grand piano. As a churchgoer, he also acted occasionally as a guide for organised pilgrimages to the Holy Land.
