Connections with Brighton and Hove :
Richard Attenborough was a world famous actor and cinema director, with one of his earliest film roles as the gangster Pinkie Brown in Brighton Rock in 1947. ’Oh What Lovely War’ which was his debut as director, was largely filmed in and around Brighton in 1968, and for ten years he was Chancellor of the University of Sussex.
In 2002 he opened a major exhibition at Brighton Museum on local film making ‘Kiss & Kill’. As a director, he won an Academy Award for ‘Ghandi’, and he was a prominent campaigner for education in all forms, particularly in developing countries.
1 Dennis Dart carried name since September 1999 as part of the launch of the Walk of Fame at Brighton Marina, on METRO Line 7 until April 2004 the bus was sold in August 2004. Name reappeared on Mercedes Streetdeck 934 in February 2024.
