845 John Heward

Connections with Brighton and Hove : John Heward, who lived in the Brighton and Hove area all his life, was well known for helping other people. He had 16 years’ service in the Territorial Army at Dyke Road Brighton followed by 30 years serving Hove and Adur Sea Cadet Unit in various roles including ten as commanding officer. In his work life he was a coach builder by trade starting as an apprentice at the Pullman Car Company. He also worked for Harrington's the coach builders, British Rail, NCL, Sunblest bakers at Woodingdean and Southdown Motors in Victoria Road Portslade. In addition, he also held down part time jobs as a football pools collector, and turnstile operator at the Goldstone ground and at the Sussex county cricket ground. He helped many sea cadets launch their careers in the armed forces and provided numerous letters of reference for those starting civilian jobs. Often called Honest John, he was well known by many for his probity, sheer hard work and devotion to duty.
