Connections with Brighton and Hove : Johnny West was a well-known and popular middleweight boxer in Brighton during the 1950s and 1960s. He was taught how to box at Brighton Boys Club and later refined his technique at Whitehawk. When he turned professional, he was the only one in Brighton at the time. He was managed by Tony Brazil who helped ensure a successful career. Born in Brighten, he was a French polisher by trade and resumed his work after retiring from boxing. He died in 2015 and there was a large congregation including many ex-boxers at the funeral. West’s wife Gloria was a Conservative councillor in Brighton for eight years. They had two sons, Stuart and Neil, who survived him.
