Connections with Brighton and Hove : Ben Perkins was locally born and was a doctor in Patcham, where he lived, for many years. He was well-known not just as a medical man, but as a dedicated walks leader, affectionately known as ‘Mr Sussex Walker’. He established the Brighton & Hove Ramblers in 1982 and was chairman of the Society of Sussex Downsmen in 1976, becoming its vice-chair for life in 2011. He was a prolific author of walks guides for Sussex, 14 volumes in all, and published over 700 walks in his fortnightly column in The Evening Argus. He co-devised the Sussex Border path and contributed to the establishment of several other long-distant routes in the county, as well as being actively involved in countryside access issues.
