The creator of Sherlock Holmes remains one of the best known authors in the world more than a century later.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859 and became a doctor before turning his talents to writing.
Although known mainly for the great detective, he also wrote poems, historic novels, and war stories.
Conan Doyle excelled at many sports and pioneered inventions such as the naval life jacket.
He married Jean Leckie in 1907 after the death of his first wife and moved to Crowborough where he spent the last 23 years of his life in a house called Windlesham which had been adapted to his needs.
Many stories and books were written in his summer house at Crowborough and the Conan Doyles did much entertaining at Windlesham. It is now a care home
Three children were born and educated in Crowborough, Denis, Malcolm and Lena. Sir Arthur also formed a local home guard at the outbreak of the First World War. He became captain of the local golf club.
He became interested in spiritualism following the death of a son and several friends and conducted experiments in it.
Although Conan Doyle was buried in Hampshire, there is a statue to him in the centre of Crowborough.
