Connections with Brighton and Hove : Alexandra Lendon Bastedo (1946–2014) was a British actress and dedicated animal rights campaigner. Born in Hove, she attended Brighton & Hove High School, where she was noted for her poise, even at the age of 12. While studying at the Worthing School of Drama, Alexandra won a competition, “Miss Teenage Diplomat,” at just 16, which led to her being scouted by Hollywood. Despite her youth, she balanced her education, completing her A-levels, while pursuing a successful acting and modelling career. She appeared in a variety of films and television series, working alongside renowned actors such as Peter Sellers and David Niven. Her most famous role was in the television series The Champions, though she also appeared in popular shows like EastEnders, Boon, and Absolutely Fabulous. In 1980, Alexandra married Patrick Garland, the artistic director of the Chichester Festival Theatre. Her lifelong love of animals inspired her to establish an animal sanctuary, first near Chichester, and later in West Chiltington. Alexandra passed away in January 2014 at the age of 67.
