Connections with Brighton and Hove : Maurice Packham was remembered as an eccentric and kind teacher at Patcham Secondary School where he taught English and history until 1983. He was well known for writing numerous letters to the Argus newspaper in Brighton over a period of many years. He started during the Second World War with a letter on Anderson shelters and continued until not long before his death aged 93. Born in Brighton on 4 March 1925, he served on the HMS Sirius in the Royal Navy in the Second World War, stationed in the Mediterranean and Africa. Although Mr Packham spent most of his working life as a teacher, he was a man of many talents. As well as being an accomplished carpenter and gardener, he was also a well-respected local historian and author. He wrote a number of plays for BBC Radio and received a playwriting award from Dame Flora Robson. The memoir of his life as a choirboy at St Anne’s Church Kemp Town, The Church Around the Corner was published by QueenSpark Books and is still available to buy online. Many former pupils posted tributes to their favourite teacher following his death in 2018.
