346 Fred Netley
Connections with Brighton and Hove : Fred Netley was a large figure on the Whitehawk estate in East Brighton. Over the years, as the estate began to suffer from a bad reputation, Fred Netley spent much time defending its residents, saying most of them were decent folk. Netley also made sure the views and concerns of residents were heard during the 1970s when the Council began a remodelling exercise in Whitehawk. Many of the long roads in the estate were replaced with smaller cul-de-sacs to allow for larger numbers of houses to fit into the same space. By the end of the scheme the number of dwellings in Whitehawk had increased to over 1,400. By 1981 the population of Whitehawk and surrounding Manor Farm was nearly 8,000. Mr Netley was passionate about local history and was President of the East Brighton Bygones Local History Society. In 1975 he wrote a book called Holy Oak: A History of Whitehawk and Manor Farm 1934–1974. He received the MBE for his tireless work in 2009. He died in the summer of 2020.
