335 Cyril Dutton
Connections with Brighton and Hove : In the decades following the Second World War, Brighton Council’s Estates Department was responsible for the management of council land and property in the city and surrounding areas. The department had a significant responsibility that included developing farmland, industrial and leisure sites. The man who ran the department for almost 30 years was the inspirational Cyril Dutton. After a distinguished war service, which included making maps for Field Marshall Montgomery, Mr Dutton initially worked for Dover Council and then became Brighton’s first estates surveyor in 1956. The Brighton portfolio produced a multi-million pound annual income for the council and Mr Dutton oversaw several large sales over the years. He was also involved in making complex decisions with regard to major sites in the city including the Marina and the Brighton Centre. Mr Dutton was well liked by his colleagues and negotiators were known to call him ‘tough, but fair’. Mr Dutton loved golf and was captain of the Dyke Club on the Downs. He retired from the council in 1984 and died two years later aged 67.
