334 K S Duleepsinhji
Connections with Brighton and Hove : Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji was a popular cricketer who played for England. Like his famous uncle, Ranjitsinhji, the ruler of the Indian princely state of Nawanagar, Duleepsinhji played for England and Sussex to great acclaim. Born in India on June 13, 1905, he came to England and at Cheltenham made his mark as a schoolboy cricketer almost at once, going on to achieve great success as a batsman for Cheltenham College, Cambridge University, Sussex and eventually England in a career cut short by recurrent illness. His Test average of 58.5 ranks him among the best batsmen to have played Test cricket. In 1930 he was named cricket Player of the Year scoring 333 runs for Sussex in one day against Northamptonshire. Following his short playing career, he retired early from cricket to pursue a life of public service as the High Commissioner of India both in New Zealand and Australia. Duleepsinhji was made Chairman of the Public Service Commission in the State of Saurashtra after his return to India. He died in 1959, following a heart attack, in Bombay, aged 50. The Duleep Trophy is named in his honour.
