Connections with Brighton and Hove : Courtney Brewer-Wren, known to her family as Courtney Paige, was a teenage cancer survivor from Brighton. Born at Worthing Hospital on the 6 March 1999, she was the eldest of five children growing up in Shoreham before moving to Brighton to become a student at Brighton Aldridge Community Academy. In June 2014, she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia and began an aggressive course of chemotherapy at the Royal Marsden Hospital. Courtney was popular on the ward, meeting every challenge with great strength and character. Towards the end of her treatment, Courtney developed a rare fungal infection in her lungs and was subsequently placed on life support at St George’s Hospital in London. Impressed by the care Courtney had received throughout her treatment, her family organised a charity fun day to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust and were overwhelmed by support from local businesses and the wider community. Courtney passed away three days later on the 2 September 2014. She was fifteen years old. Her family and friends were comforted by the news that she had successfully beaten the cancer she’d been diagnosed with just 3 months earlier.
