329 John WisdenNames on the buses
Connections with Brighton and Hove : Born in Brighton in 1826, John Wisden soon became one of the foremost cricketers of the day. Playing in a match between the North and the South in 1850, Wisden took all ten wickets and is still the only man in history to have achieved this feat by bowling out all his victims. Wisden, a fearsome fast bowler, played for Sussex between 1845 and 1863. For many years there was a sports shop in Duke Street, Brighton, which had family connections. But his greatest claim to fame was founding the almanac which bears his name today in 1864. Known as the cricketers’ bible, Wisden contains every detail anyone could wish to know about the game and a great deal more besides.
