328 Frederick WescheNames on the buses
Connections with Brighton and Hove : Frederick Wesche was the head waiter at The Metropole hotel in Brighton in the years before the First World War. By this time, he was already a long-serving member of staff at the hotel which had opened in 1890. The Metropole was one of the biggest and grandest hotels outside London and Wesche was responsible for high standards in catering. He was a patriot who had four sons in the front line fighting against Germany as war broke out. Brighton historian Kevin Newman said he was asked to quit his job and given half an hour to leave. This was in spite of the fact he had been a naturalised citizen of Britain for more than 30 years. Offered the choice of emigrating or moving away from the coast, he chose to leave the country and went to Canada. The family did well and Wesche became a successful businessman. Many years later, The Metropole made amends by hosting an afternoon tea for his grandson Clive Wellwood.
