327 Rupert Webb

Connections with Brighton and Hove : Rupert Webb was a notable Sussex cricketer who also had a career in show business. He played for his county for13 years and was a talented wicket keeper, particularly adept at stumping batsmen. Webb was less able at batting himself but was brave and a good man in a crisis. Born in Harrow in 1922, he was offered a place at Cambridge only for his father to reject it for financial reasons. Webb took up cricket while working as a photographer and after the Second World War joined Sussex. He left after a dispute with his captain, Robin Marlah, over whether he should be awarded a benefit year. Webb was married three times and his third wife Barbara Whatley, gave him the brake he needed into show business. She was a well-connected actress . He proved to be an excellent actor and appeared in many films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral. He was also in demand for commercials. The Webbs moved to Rottingdean where they made many friends. Rupert kept up his cricket connections, helping to save a club in Seaford. He served on the board for Sussex and campaigned for players to get better wages. Webb died after a stroke aged 96 in 2018. His ashes were interred at the county ground in Hove.
