Connections with Brighton and Hove : David Rutter had two claims to fame. He was well known in Brighton as an exceptional teacher. He was also the man who introduced sushi to the resort. Rutter worked in the East End of London before deciding to take up teaching. He moved to Brighton and studied education at Sussex University for an MA, He taught English and drama at the Nevill School in Hove which became part of Blatchington Mill. His unique style was admired by children and he also became assistant head. On retiring in 1988, Rutter went to Hawaii where he had married his partner Liz a few years before. He studied suschi making with a Japanese teacher and started a business on returning to Brighton. It was popular with locals and visitors. Among its admirers was the singer Grace Jones who sent Rutter a thank you note with what she called killer kisses. Rutter travelled a lot and visited Brazil 25 times, often going to the carnival. He also had a wide variety of music in his extensive collection. He died aged 82 in 2015.
