Connections with Brighton and Hove : Brighton had very few residents from ethnic minorities until the 1990s and they were not always treated well. Jacky Harding, a community worker, saw the importance of education and learning new skills in improving their lot. She was elected to Brighton and Hove City Council for Labour in 2000 and was the first black woman to do so. Two previous councillors from ethnic minorities had been of Asian extraction. She came to Sussex University from Sierra Leone to study economics and soon afterwards joined Labour. Jacky Harding was lead councillor for the Labour group on lifelong learning and believed that people of all ages could benefit from education. She worked for the University of Brighton and was also a member of the Friends’ Centre management committee. There was widespread sadness in the city when she died at the early age of 45 from liver failure.
