Connections with Brighton and Hove : Andy Cunningham, creator of the popular children’s TV show Bodger and Badger, is still remembered fondly today. He wrote scripts for the BBC show and starred in it too, playing the accident prone handyman Simon Bodger. He also provided the voice for the beret-wearing badger that loved mashed potato. Cunningham, who had strong connections with Brighton, died at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in 2017 aged 67 from cancer. He read English at Cambridge and gave comedian Julian Clary his first job when he was writing and directing for the Covent Garden Community Theatre Group, To show how versatile he was, Cunningham had a role in Return of the Jedi. . Cunningham was an accomplished ventriloquist and also became interested in magic after attending a convention in Brighton. He was extremely quick witted and had an instinct for what made children laugh.
