302 Joy BennettNames on the buses
Connections with Brighton and Hove : Harrington Motors in Hove was well known to most people in the bus industry because it specialised in motor coach production. Among those who worked at the building in Old Shoreham Road was a local woman, Joy Bennett. When the Second World War broke out, Harrington concentrated on repairing planes which had crashed such as Spitfires which were vital in the war effort. She became a champion riveter, repairing wings and cooling vents, and had the planes flying again swiftly. Joy Bennett had to work long hours and although she was only 17 she showed bosses how she did it. She also helped train new recruits. She lived to be over 90 and always retained her interest in buses, travelling on them most days in her retirement.
