Connections with Brighton and Hove : Trevor Mann was a children’s doctor whose skill saved the lives of many babies in Brighton. He founded a special care baby unit at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. The unit is still there and is named after him. It caters for around 450 premature babies every year. Dr Mann set up the unit, initially at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children in Dyke Road, Brighton, in 1970. He did so after reading an article in the medical journal The Lancet about new artificial breathing techniques being used to treat young babies with a low birth weight. The unit has become one of the foremost centres for treating these babies and has dramatically lowered the death rate. Dr Mann died from cancer in 1996.
